Makena Cook, 8, from North Central Phoenix, captured the Arizona Diamondbacks Team Pitch, Hit & Run Championship for the 7-8 age division during games held June 9 at Chase Field.

Makena clinched the No. 1 spot for her age group in the region of Arizona and New Mexico. The top three in each age group for each region, from across the nation, will advance to the MLB Pitch, Hit & Run National Finals, to be held during the MLB All-Star Game in New York. Those winners’ names were to be announced on June 30.

Makena will be a third grader at Madison Traditional Academy this fall and has played softball for RAMMS (Recreational Association of Meadows-Simis) for the last two seasons. She is coached by her dad, Jeff Cook.

RAMMS hosted a local MLB-sponsored Kid’s Pitch, Hit, Run Competition on April 13, where Makena won the All-Around in her 7-8 age bracket, advancing to the Sectionals in Mesa on May 11, where she also won the All-Around. Her scores at sectionals ranked her in the top-three in the state, advancing her to the Arizona Diamondbacks Team Championship at Chase Field on June 9.
