Hospice of the Valley has been awarded a $285,000 grant from Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust to develop a program designed to improve the quality of life for people with dementia and their families.

The Palliative Care for Dementia program will serve people with dementia at any stage and support their caregivers. Hospitals and hospice are not designed to serve dementia patients throughout the disease’s long course. Patients usually fare best at home or in home-like settings at substantially lower cost than institutional settings.

Patients and families pay privately at the rate of $250 a month. Services include home visits from dementia educators; 24/7 phone access to a nurse or social worker; and respite time for family caregivers provided by trained volunteers.
