Phoenix restaurateur and chef Silvana Salcido Esparza has brought her popular “barrio” eatery to the North Central community, with the opening of Barrio Urbano on Jan. 5.

Barrio Urban fills the space vacated by Lola Tapas, inside The Yard at 5632 N. 7th St. The space was first redesigned by Ideation Design Group (IDG), a Phoenix-based interior design and architecture firm that previously worked with Esparza on Barrio Café at Phoenix Sky Harbor and the development of Tinta at Arizona Mills.

The 1,768-square-foot restaurant will accommodate approximately 40 diners and serves south-of-the-border-inspired breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as all-day menudo. It also sports a full bar.

The walls feature murals created by a collaboration of local artists. Diners will have the option of indoor or outdoor seating that overlooks the courtyard and offers views of the fully exposed kitchen. The restaurant is open seven days a week, with late hours on weekends. Like them on Facebook at BarrioUrbanPHX, or call 602-287-9000.

IDG also will work with Esparza on her expansion of the original Barrio Café, located 16th Street just south of Thomas Road. The project will include a private dining room that seats up to 25 guests, new larger restrooms, a second bar, and stage for live music.
