One person’s surplus is another’s necessity, and St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance is hoping that once again the Valley’s overflowing neighborhood citrus trees can be transformed into a bountiful harvest for those in need this winter.

For those who are able to glean their own fruit, St. Mary’s will hold its sixth-annual “Super Citrus Saturday” citrus drop-off on Saturday, Jan. 24, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at North Phoenix Baptist Church, 5757 N. Central Ave. Oranges are most particularly needed this year.

If your trees are overflowing right now and you can’t wait until Jan. 24, or you missed the drop-off date and still have fruit to donate, you can bring your donated citrus to the food bank located at 2831 N. 31st Ave. during normal business hours.

Last year, more than 2 million pounds of citrus was gleaned from Valley trees through the program. Much of the grapefruit was juiced through a cooperative effort with Sun Orchard in Tempe to produce tens of thousands of gallons of grapefruit juice which was bottled and distributed well after the growing season ended.
