North Central diners who frequented the Z’Tejas at 16th Street and Bethany Home Road were surprised when the restaurant closed without notice on Oct. 21. Employees were reportedly given no notice as to the impending closure. A spokesperson for the chain, which was founded in Texas and included five Valley eateries, confirmed that all but two of the Arizona locations are closed. The remaining restaurants are at Tatum and Shea, and Ray Road in Chandler.

The spokesperson said it was an internal company decision, based on the low sales at the other three Valley restaurants, and that the company would now focus on bolstering business at its two remaining Arizona locations.

However, a notice posted on the Bethany Home location seems to contradict the “internal company decision.” It is a legal statement from 16 Bethany Station, LLC, asserting a landlord’s lien on the property, including all personal property, furniture and fixtures inside the restaurant. The notice states that the seizure of the property and assets will remain until “such property is sold for payment of rent due … or other arrangements satisfactory to the owner/ landlord, in its sole discretion, are made.”

The spokesperson was unaware of the notice of lien and could not comment as of press time.
