A lot of specialty food places have been popping up around Phoenix, and Soup & Sausage Bistro is no exception.

Located in the shopping center in the southwest corner of 7th Street and Thunderbird Road, the Eastern European-focused eatery, which opened in April, is the passion project of Alex Koshalkoand his wife, Nataly, both natives of Ukraine. Here you will find old recipes from Ukrainian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, German and other Eastern European cuisines, with a slightly modern twist, joined together on one eclectic menu.

“A lot of people like to discover new tastes and cuisines,” Koshalko says. “The idea was to make a restaurant with the service that is very close to American traditions, but with absolutely different food. Our traditions in cooking are different. All our dishes—soups, cabbage rolls, stewed dishes, meatloaf, meatballs, dumplings, pirozhki and others—are hand crafted. Also we cook a big variety of sausages.”

The menu also features salads and desserts. Catering is available.

Koshalko says the food is prepared with fresh ingredients and no additives or preservatives.

The family-owned eatery is slowly building a local following, and Koshalko is excited about the response the bistro’s hearty and diverse food. “The only thing we expected for sure is that the taste of our dishes will remind our customers how their moms and grandmas cooked for them.”

Soup & Sausage Bistro is located at 13240 N. 7th St., Suites 4-5. Hours are 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. For more information, call 480-319-2208 or visit www.myeurokitchen.com.
