Citifarms, an indoor vertical farm grows microgreens and other leafy greens hydroponically in a controlled environment, is the first retail tenant signed to open in the historic Ellis Building at 135 N. 2nd Ave. The company plans to open a vegetarian restaurant, as well as vertical gardens, in a 4,200-square-foot area. Citifarms will use items grown in the vertical farm in its menu, which will emphasize microgreens, the seedlings of edible herbs and vegetables. Diners should be able to check out the new restaurant in the fall of next year.

The Ellis building was first built in 1922 with four stories and two more stories were added in 1928.
