The Sunnyslope High School Viking Parents Club will host its inaugural Sunnyslope Scamper event, Saturday, April 9.

Sunnyslope student Kaden Thomas works on one of five 12-foot high “Ks” for the inaugural Sunnyslope Scamper 5K run (submitted photo).

The 5K run event will begin and end at the high school, with most of the course along the Salt River Project canal.

The inaugural Sunnyslope Scamper event logo was designed by student Sophia Mendivil.

The theme of the inaugural run is “Run Now — Run for Life,” and encourages students and others to run their first 5K. Participants running their first race will receive white headbands and people who have run a prior 5K or longer will get a green headband.

At the awards ceremony, after the first, second and third place for the various age groups are awarded, the participants with white head bands will present Craig Davidson a lifetime achievement award. Davidson, who was inducted into the Arizona Running Hall of Fame in November 2018 and works at Runner’s Den in North Central Phoenix, has run 255 marathons (26.2 miles each) — that is a marathon every other month for 42 years.  He has run a total of 217,000 miles.

The inaugural Scamper is enlisting the support of the school’s students. The Sunnyslope Marching Band will be playing at the start and finish line; the Art department hosted a competition for the creation of the event logo and chose the design by student Sophia Mendivil; and the wood shop students are making five, 12-foot high “Ks” for kilometer markers on the course.

The entire community is encouraged to participate in the event, and all proceeds will benefit the Viking Parents Club, which in turn supports Sunnyslope High School.
