VFW Post hosts two essay contests

The Ladies Auxiliary of VPW Post 9400 once again hosts its Voices of Democracy essay contest for high school students. In addition, the group presents a “Patriot Pen” essay contest for middle school students.

The topic for the 2008 Voices of Democracy program is “Service and Sacrifice by America’s Veterans Benefit Today’s Youth By ... .” High school students who wish to enter the contest will complete the statement in both a written essay and a 5-minute recording on cassette tape. Judging is based on originality, content, and speech delivery on the tape. Students must speak clearly on the recording and the volume should be reasonably high enough to hear.

Nominate a teacher to win show tickets

In honor of Childsplay’s upcoming production of “Miss Nelson is Missing!”, grade school students in the Valley are encouraged to nominate their favorite teacher to win a prize.
Each week in September, Childsplay will randomly pick five nominations from all the entries. The winners will receive a four-pack of tickets to see “Miss Nelson is Missing!” at Tempe Center for the Arts (Sept. 13-Oct. 5). One grand prizewinner will be selected in October and that teacher will win a field trip for his or her class to any show in Childsplay’s 2008-09 season.
Students can enter their nominations at the Childsplay Web site: www.childsplayaz.org/contest-teacher.

Apply now for M&I scholarship

Last year, Lauralee Ward was a senior at Sunnyslope High School in Phoenix. Next year, she hopes to be in Guadalajara with fellow students from Brigham Young University perfecting her Spanish-language skills.

A member of Sunnyslope’s cross-country, tennis and varsity basketball teams, Ward also was vice president of her school’s Future Educators of America club and a member of the National Honor Society. Last year, M&I Bank recognized Ward’s potential and helped her make the decision to study elementary education at BYU by awarding her with a $5,500 scholarship in honor of her educational achievements and athletic contributions.
