Target offers 5,000 field trip grants

Whether it was a trip to the local museum, a sporting event or a play, people never forget their favorite field trip. Many experts agree that field trips can be an integral part of a child’s education, giving students real-life experience to supplement abstract classroom lessons.

Unfortunately, field trips have been one of the first programs to feel the impact of budget cuts in recent years. According to a recent report by the American Association of School Administrators, a staggering 51 percent of schools nationwide reported eliminating field trips for the 2010-2011 school year, a dramatic increase from 11 percent just two years ago.

Take Care Clinics offer sports physicals

Take Care Health Systems, a wholly owned subsidiary of Walgreens, is now offering back-to-school physicals at Take Care Clinics nationwide, through Sept. 30.

The physicals are administered by board certified nurse practitioners and physician assistants and are available for $35. Families or groups with two or more children, who arrive at the Take Care Clinic together, can receive back-to-school physicals for $30 each.

During the physical, a Take Care Health provider will assess a student’s height, weight, body mass index, vision and other information while also discussing and providing counseling on immunizations and high-risk behaviors. State requirements for back-to-school and sports physicals vary. Parents and guardians can talk to a school official or a Take Care Health professional to learn what’s appropriate for their child.

Local Take Care Clinics are located in the Walgreens at the northwest corner of Central Avenue and Osborn Road, and at the northeast corner of 35th and Dunlap avenues. No appointment is necessary.

Madison Park NJHS chapter honored

Last year, Madison Park’s chapter of National Junior Honor Society was chosen as one of five (out of 25,000) National Chapters to receive the Outstanding Service Project of the Year award for its Breast Cancer Awareness week. Park’s chapter was the only chapter (NJHS or NHS) in all of Arizona and the western part of the U.S.

“Our chapter and its members worked so hard last year to make a difference in our community and raised more than $5,000 doing it,” said NJHS sponsor Leah Jenks.

The Arizona Education Association will feature the Madison Park NJHS chapter and this award in the next edition of The Advocate.
