Freedom Walk 2010 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11 Steele Indian School Park Memorial Hall 300 E. Indian School Road 602-246-6429 www.operationhomefront.net/arizona Join Operation Homefront of Arizona in continuing a national tradition reflecting on the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001, and honoring veterans past and present. Registration begins at 10:15 a.m. followed by a ceremony featuring Brigadier General Greg Maxon (Ret.), the Firebird Young Marines and the USMC Color Guard. The 1-mile walk follows the ceremony. A free T-shirt will be given to the first 100 registered walkers.
History Museum Fall Opening 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12 Sunnyslope History Museum 737 E. Hatcher Road 602-331-3150 The museum has a fresh new look to its displays, photographs and memorabilia, plus a new coat of paint thanks to many hard-working volunteers. On display will be a collection of photographs and stories from the Sage Newspaper. This local newspaper covered the events and progress of Sunnyslope and the Cactus area communities. Its motto was “The only newspaper you can open up in a high wind—or read on a horse.” Admission is free.
Community Second Sunday 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12 Heard Museum 2301 N. Central Ave. www.heard.org Admission is free on this day for Arizona residents at Heard Museum Phoenix. Visit the exhibit galleries, stop for lunch at the café and search for a special treasure at the Heard Museum Shop.
Phoenix Writers Club 12-2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18 Bluewater Grill 1720 E. Camelback Road Clay Thompson, Arizona Republic columnist and author of Valley 101, will be the guest speaker. Thompson’s column answers questions, offering a humorous look at life in Arizona. Luncheon cost is $15 for members and $20 for guests. Reservations must be made by Sept. 16. Coffee Chat with Kunasek 8 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21 SVA Community Action Office 755 E. Hatcher Road 602-506-7562 Maricopa County Supervisor Andy Kunasek will resume his monthly meetings. Kunasek brings an update of Maricopa County news and events plus a guest speaker. The meetings are very community motivated. Coffee and doughnuts will be provided.
AAUW Dinner 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21 The Everett Luther Center at the Beatitudes 1616 W. Glendale Ave. 480-483-8267 AAUW hosts Eric Ehst, member of AAUW and Arizona State President of Now. Ehst will speak on ballot propositions for this fall’s election. Guests welcome. Cost is $12 with a dinner, or free for just the speaker beginning at 6:30 p.m. Enter through the gate at the east end of the Beatitudes, by the preschool. RSVP requested for the dinner.
Sunnyslope Kiwanis Annual ‘Steak Fry’ 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24 Moon Valley Country Club 151 W. Moon Valley Drive There will be a no-host bar throughout the evening and entertainment. A Silent Auction will take place during the event with 100 percent of the proceeds supporting children-in-need in the neighborhood (donations still be accepted). This year’s dinner will be provided by “2009 Chef of the Year,” Stan Reinhold. Tickets are $30 for individuals or $50 per couple. Rainbow Festival 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Oct. 2-3 Heritage Square Park 7th St. and Monroe The annual Rainbows Festival & Street Fair is a celebration of the diversity of the LGBT community. There is no charge to attend this fun weekend of fun, frolic and food. There will be nearly 175 exhibitors including a variety of artists, art & craft sellers, non-profits, a food court, and more. Legacy of Love Dinner and Silent Auction 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2 Black Canyon Conference Center 9440 N. 25th Ave. 602-371-0806, ext. 163 Join VALLEYLIFE for an evening of caring and support at the sixth- annual fundraiser. The keynote speaker is Jerry Traylor. Born with Cerebral Palsy, Traylor has finished 28 marathons on his crutches, climbed 14,110-foot Pikes Peak, jogged 3,528 miles across America, and parachuted from 12,500 feet. The event includes a cocktail reception, silent & live auctions, dinner, and live music. Individual tickets are $99.
