Help the homeless stay cool in summer

When the temperatures soar and the hot summer days are upon us, many homeless people who live on the streets do not have their basic needs met.

The city of Phoenix is asking people to donate the following items: unopened water bottles, sunscreen, new underwear, white socks, white T-shirts, insect repellent and pre-packaged snack items such as individually wrapped cookies and crackers, to be distributed to the homeless. Cash or check donations to supplement the donated items also are welcomed. The program runs through Sept. 30.

Tax-deductible donations may be delivered to the city’s Sunnyslope Family Services Center, 914 W. Hatcher Road, 602-495-5229.  The center is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.

The donated items are distributed by local homeless outreach teams from Tumbleweed Center for Youth Development, Stand Up for Kids, Basic Mission, Community Bridges, HomeBase Youth Services, The Salvation Army Project HOPE, Health Care for the Homeless, TERROS, Southwest Behavioral Health Service/PATH Outreach, US Vets, Set Free Ministry and Catholic Charities.

City program’s former

youth, volunteers sought

Greater Phoenix Youth at Risk Foundation announces its 20th Anniversary Celebration, a reunion on Sunday, Oct. 18, at the PERA Club in Tempe.

To commemorate 20 years of service, Youth at Risk will bring together all who have made a difference or touched by Youth at Risk over the years, including youth, mentors, board members, donors, foundations, businesses, community leaders, government, law enforcement and schools. Youth at Risk is seeking help from the community to find these former individuals.

The 20-year anniversary will be an opportunity to celebrate the impact Youth at Risk has on the community, its youth and volunteers, as well as a chance to connect and reconnect the community of past, present and future volunteers.

The festivities will include a picnic lunch, games, entertainment, and a recognition program. For more information, call 602-258-1012 or visit www.phoenixyouthatrisk.org.
