Kiwanis honor local students

Eight local students were honored by the Kiwanis Club of Sunnyslope during its “Student of the Month” luncheon, held Feb. 11 on the campus of Sunnyslope High School.

Receiving a framed certificate as a Student of Month was Jose Parada, seventh grade, from Royal Palm Middle School. He was described as being helpful to other students and demonstrating leadership qualities. Royal Palm eighth-grader Brenda Rivera Estrada, who was unable to attend the luncheon, also was recognized for being a student who works hard to improve herself every day.

From Sunnyslope Elementary, four students were honored: seventh graders Alexis Ivers-Frank and Erik Rodriguez, and eighth graders Gabriel Garcia and Reyna Rodriguez.

Ivers-Frank was praised for balancing her school work with sports and music in an efficient manner. Erik Rodriguez, whose favorite subject is math, was described as being one of the school’s friendliest students. Garcia was lauded for being extremely dependable and for excelling both in class and on the soccer field. Reyna Rodriguez was applauded for setting high standards and being always willing to help her teachers and her peers.

Also honored at the luncheon was Sunnyslope High School senior Drew Nochta and Central High School junior Aldijana Hasic. Nochta is a student who is committed to always doing his best. He hopes to become a chef and will attend Scottsdale’s Arizona Culinary Institute in the fall. Hasic is in several advanced classes at Central and volunteers in the Counseling Office, where she helps oversee the other student counseling assistants. She is considering becoming a gynecologist.

The Kiwanis honor outstanding students each month for academic and leadership successes.
