Students exceed goal with food drive Royal Palm Middle School students strived to help families in need during the holiday season through food donations. The campus held two separate food drives to benefit families in the Royal Palm region during November and December. Students in all three grades donated more than 2,000 food items that were divided up into 21 food boxes. Additional items were donated to the Dessert Mission Food Bank operated by John C. Lincoln hospital. Each food box contained a variety of canned fruits, vegetables and beans, as well as pasta and cereal selections. In addition, a chicken, turkey or ham was included for each family and 10 boxes had a gift card to a local grocery store. The Royal Palm National Junior Honor Society and Student Council led the effort in collecting the food from classrooms. The art department aided efforts by making holiday ornaments and bookmarks to sell. The profits from the sale paid for the gift cards. Families were identified through various sources. The campus has an array of outside resources to help its students. The referrals for the food boxes came through Valle del Sol, the City of Phoenix, and counseling referrals from Royal Palm. “These efforts directly benefit our community and teach students the importance of donating time, food, and services to those in need,” said Jamie O’Keeffe, Team 7A Reading teacher at Royal Palm. “At Royal Palm we encourage our kids to have great character and to be pillars of our community.” |
