Shadow Mountain Senior Center events Shadow Mountain is one of the newest Phoenix Senior Centers. Located at 3546 E. Sweetwater Ave., the center provides people 60 years or older, or adults with disabilities, with nutrition programs, group meals, educational opportunities, recreation and social activities, information, referral, advocacy, transportation and counseling/casework services. While the Sunnyslope Senior Center is being remodeled, seniors from the Sunnyslope community are invited to visit Shadow Mountain. Upcoming programs include: • “Matter of Balance” fall prevention training class, 9-11 a.m. every Thursday beginning Feb. 21. This free, eight-week course offers practical advice to reduce an older adult’s risk of serious injury from a fall. Sessions discuss how to manage the fear of falling, exercise and fall prevention, recognizing fall hazards in the home and identifying risk behaviors. Registration is required. • Free Glucose Screening, 9-11 a.m. Feb. 28. Irregular blood glucose levels often yield no symptoms, which is why regular screenings are so important. During these screenings, you’ll learn how to reduce your risk for diabetes and receive educational materials. Fasting is not required. The screenings are free, however, pre-registration required. Hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday, except holidays. A calendar of monthly events and menus is available online at: http://phoenix.gov/ srcntrs/cntrshad.html. For more information, call the center at 602-534-2303. Activities, fun offered at JFCS The nonprofit JFCS Center for Senior Enrichment is a place where adults age 60 and older (and physically challenged adults of any age) can come to socialize, eat a tasty kosher lunch Monday-Friday ($4), and take advantage of a variety of free and low-cost classes. • “Art All Around Us-Michelangelo,” 12:40 p.m. Feb. 11. Join the Phoenix Art Museum’s docents as they entertain and educate. • “You Are What You Eat!” with Laura Kroon of the Maricopa County Office of Nutrition, 12:40 p.m. Feb. 19. Get the bite on a healthy diet! • “Behind the Scenes” with Linda Williams, Channel 10 anchor, 12:40 p.m. Feb. 28.
