‘Crowns’

    Based on the book by Michael Cunningham and Craig Marberry, “Crowns” is a moving and celebratory musical play in which hats become a springboard for an exploration of black history and identity. After her brother is murdered in Brooklyn, Yolanda is sent down South to live with her grandmother. Her story is at the center of Crowns. Ticket prices are $22-$35. Curtain times are Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m.; Sundays at 3 p.m. Additional matinees are Feb 20 at 2 p.m. and The Target Family Matinee on Feb 23 at 2 p.m., with specially priced $12 ticket for families.

    The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department’s free People’s Pops Concert Series presents “Side by Side,” a tribute to our youth in music. The Phoenix Symphony and the Phoenix Symphony Guild Youth Orchestra perform together. Doors open at 1 p.m. for a pre-concert in the lobby by CityJazz Youth Big Band. Free tickets (limit four per person) are available at all Phoenix Public Libraries beginning the Saturday eight days before the concert.

‘Don Quixote’

    “Don Quixote” the ballet was inspired by Miguel de Cervantes’ 17th-century novel of courtly love, chivalry, and deception. The ballet puts aside the satire and darker social commentary of the novel, favoring instead good-natured fun and rollicking dance. Tickets are $15 to $115. Discounts available for students, seniors, children, and groups.

    On Feb. 14 the Heard hosts a panel of three artists who perform different types of music. The artists each will explain what inspires them and their work. Audience can listen to samples and ask questions. Then on Feb. 21, listen to a presentation by musical artists who work on film soundtracks, music videos and film scores. For both programs, the reception begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by the lecture at 6:30 p.m. Free with museum admission ($5 adults, $4 seniors, $2 students with ID).

    The 2001 smash Broadway hit where six unemployed steelworkers find an unusual way to make quick cash while finding their self-esteem. As moving as it is fun with an ending left to the imagination. Tickets are $40.50-$42.50, with discounts for seniors and students with ID.

    Casting nine men and women ages late teens to 50s, and technical staff (light board, sound board, etc.). This theater-themed comedy includes physical slapstick. Callbacks are set for Feb. 21. Auditions will consist of one prepared monologue and cold readings from the script. Copies of the script are available on reserve at the PVCC library. Rehearsals begin Feb. 25. Performances take place April 10-20.

    Featuring new choreography, luxurious colorful costumes and full-throttle production, the Bellydance Superstars’ “Babelesque” beautifully captures the multi-faceted art of bellydance—at once playful and spiritual; about escape as much as connection.     The great artists and familiar songs of the American musical theater are presented. The performance showcases new modern dance choreographed to Rodgers and Hammerstein, Lerner and Loewe, Cole Porter, George and Ira Gershwin and more. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Feb. 28-March 1, and 2 p.m. March 2. Tickets are $21 for adults, $17 for seniors and $9 for students; all plus box office charges.

    Nature and art come together in this four-day event featuring sculptural floral designs inspired by and partnered with works of art in the museum’s collection. Arrangements by dozens of Valley floral designers and garden clubs will be on view throughout the museum’s galleries to complement and illuminate the museum’s works of art. Arts & Flowers 08 will launch with a luncheon at the Museum’s Whiteman Hall on March 6. The luncheon is open to the public with reservations required. Demonstrations and workshops will be available during Arts & Flowers.
