Kinder registration now under way
Preschool and Kindergarten registration has begun. Choosing to register your child in a good school can be one of the most important decisions a parent can make for a child’s future.
Osborn offers preschool and Head Start to a limited number of children as well as a full program of services to all K-8 students. Osborn also offers all-day kindergarten with English Only or Dual Language English/Spanish classrooms.
Osborn has open enrollment so you need not reside in the district to register. Parents will need to bring: birth certificate, a copy of immunization records, name and address of previous school (if applicable), and proof of legal custody may also be required. For more information, call:

Foundation awards grants
Osborn Educational Foundation (OEF) recently awarded mini-grants to teachers in Osborn District schools. Twice a year, Osborn teachers and staff have the opportunity to write for mini-grants to promote innovation and enhancement in education; improve literacy; or improve students’ physical and mental health.
This spring, the Foundation’s Executive Committee announced seven mini-grant awards to district teachers. Clarendon Dual Language teacher Aimee Kohli will use the funds to purchase books for her classroom library so students can compare literary translations of various versions of Don Quixote.
Solano teacher Marcia Beus will use the funds to purchase cameras to photograph desert plants and animals during the class’s annual North Mountain Desert Hike to help students properly identify desert flora/fauna and create oral reports with posters.
Montecito teacher Michelle Kingsland’s students will learn to crochet as part of a writing unit on “following directions” in their special education classroom. Crocheting can also help increase students’ hand/eye coordination.
Osborn Middle School teacher Brian Holman will use the funds to support his eighth-grade students’ tour of the state capitol and state legislature.
Physical Education teacher Debbie Fields received two mini-grants. She will use one to purchase agility equipment for Encanto students to learn movement and spatial awareness, concentration, focus, coordination, footwork, agility, and stamina. Fields will use the second grant to purchase equipment for tethered tennis—a game Montecito students will play to improve hand/eye coordination and fitness.
Solano Kindergarten teacher Victoria Lively will purchase a classroom camera so the learners in her Structured English Immersion classroom can use photographs of their personal environs to acquire new language skills. Each picture will truly be “worth 1,000 words”!

Third graders get special book
KidsRead gave Osborn third-grade students their own hardcover Dr. Seuss book during the first week of March to celebrate Theodore Seuss Geisel’s (Dr. Seuss) birthday.
KidsRead was founded 13 years ago by Eileen Bailey Driscol and the Osborn Educational Foundation. KidsRead is a program to improve literacy by giving third graders books to keep in their home libraries, so that they will have appropriate level reading material in their homes.
Each month, third-grade students can receive books at family KidsRead events in their library with guest readers. KidsRead is supported through donation to the Osborn Educational Foundation. Visit www.OsbornSchools.org/OEF for more information.

Longview School’s ‘souper’ food drive

Longview Student Council organized a donation and food drive for St. Mary’s Food Bank as part the national “Souper Bowl of Caring” program supported by many NFL teams, including the AZ Cardinals.
Student Council members organized the event and delivered monetary and food donations to St. Mary’s Food Bank. The donations from the school community exceeded their goals, raising more than $500 and collecting 2,439 food items. It was a tremendous success, thanks in part to Multicultural Resource Center (MRC) teacher Beth Berkich, and all the students who helped pack food items for collection.
Students feel fortunate to have the community support their school and appreciate the opportunity to give back to the community.
