‘Topsy-Turvy’

Phoenix Art Museum
1625 N. Central Ave.

A hilarious account of the creation of W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan’s operetta “The Mikado,” captured by British director Mike Leigh. After a run of popular hits (“The Pirates of Penzance” and “HMS Pinafore”), the brilliant but disparate team comes to a creative impasse when Sullivan wishes to compose “serious” music. Disharmony ensues and the pair considers breaking up the partnership. A chance visit to a Japanese art exposition in London provides the unexpected inspiration to keep the team together. 116 minutes. Films are free with regular museum admission. Part of the Arizona Opera Film Series, presented in partnership with Phoenix Art Museum’s “Movies at the Museum.”

Scottsdale Artists’ School is continuing its series of weekend workshops at Phoenix Art Museum this summer. This class, taught by Carrie Curran, will show you the basics of working with oil paints. You’ll get to experiment with mixing colors, painting on a canvas board, and creating a simple still life painting. Students will learn the process of creating an oil painting, from composition and blocking in shapes, to using colors, values, and brushwork to make an image have excitement and depth. Cost is $170 for museum members and $200 for non-members. Materials for each workshop are included with tuition, but all students should bring a sketchpad and pencil. To register call or visit ScottsdaleArtSchool.org. Classes are listed under Semester 2008 Local Offsites.
