Free event looks at sustainability

In a city filled with messages about sustainability, Church of the Beatitudes United Church of Christ is hosting a free “green” Open House and Children’s Fair for the community on Sunday, Sept. 7 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The event will focus on welcoming the community and providing education and outreach regarding sustainability.

The theme of the open house and fair is based on Kermit the Frog Muppet song, “It’s Not Easy Being Green.” In the beginning of the song, Kermit laments the fact that he is green, but by the end, he says, “It’s beautiful! And that’s what I want to be!” Church of the Beatitudes wants to show how beautiful—and easy—it is to be green and be a better steward of the environment.

The event will feature suggestions and ideas for “going green.” People can find ways to become better consumers of the Earth’s resources with just a few changes. Ideas about integrating sustainable and energy-efficient technologies, sustainable food practices, green energy, carbon trails, water conservation and recycling will be available. The Church will even provide “green” food for everyone who comes.

There also will be areas available where people can recycle old cell phones and plastic grocery bags. Activities for children will include a climbing wall, bounce house, wet slide and crafts.

The Open House and Children’s Fair is an annual event at Church of the Beatitudes, and is free to the community. For more information, contact Barbara Wood at 602-264-1221.
