Klein receives an ATHENA
The Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce announced its 2008 ATHENA Businesswomen of the Year Awards and ATHENA Young Professional Award recipients last month at the Chamber's 21st Annual ATHENA Award Luncheon at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa.

Among the winners was North Central resident Courtney Klein, CEO of New Global Citizens, who was awarded the ATHENA Young Professional Award.

While a senior at Arizona State University, Courtney Klein used a $1,000 seed grant to launch Youth Re:Action Corps, a nonprofit with a mission to educate, empower and invest in young people to change the world. By the time its pilot program was completed in Spring 2006, more than $500,000 was secured to support expansion in Arizona and California.

Two years later, after realizing the impact students could have on international communities, Klein spearheaded a merger with New Global Citizens. Consequently, she became the organization’s CEO and now helps serve more than 50 U.S. high schools and communities in more than 22 countries.

“These women exemplify what the spirit of ATHENA is all about—they have excelled in their professions, are active in their communities, and reach out to mentor others. In today's tumultuous times, it is inspiring to hear the stories of such strong, wise and courageous leaders," said Katie Pushor, president & CEO, Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce. "Our chamber is honored to be able to present this award and recognize the caliber of leadership in our community.”
