Gorton wins essay contest ![]() As the kids’ division winner of the Phoenix Public Library’s recent essay contest, Henry Gorton received a “Love Your Library” canvas book bag from the Friends of the Phoenix Public Library filled with a T-shirt, books, notecards, $20 Friends Place gift certificate, bookmarks, passes to Arizona Science Center’s Narnia exhibit and other fun things (submitted photo). The contest invited kids, ages 6-11, to write an essay about “Which superhero would you like to explore Phoenix Public Library with and why?” For teens, ages 12-18, the essay was, “Which rock star would you like to explore Phoenix Public Library with and why?” Gorton was the winner for the kids’ category. He wrote about exploring the library with a “Watcher,” a character in the “Fantastic Four” comics. The 87 entries were judged on originality, composition and creativity. The winning essays can be read on phoenixpubliclibrary.org. Lots to do at Acacia Movie Saturdays continue at the library, from 1 to 3 p.m. The movies are family-friendly and for all ages. Teens programs include Game Night, which takes place 6-8 p.m. on Nov. 17. Listen to music, play Nintendo Wii and Guitar Hero, or enjoy a board game. Snacks provided. The Teen Council also hosts a Movie Night 6-8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 24, with popcorn and soda provided. Not to be left out, the ’tweens can get together once a month during ’Tween Time, held 3-5 p.m. the second Wednesday of the month. Games, movies, crafts and snacks are provided. The Acacia Bookworms Book Club meets 6:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, to discuss Aravind Adiga’s “The White Tiger: a Novel.” Call 602-319-4647 for information. Friends of the Library-Acacia Chapter meets 1-4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, for a short review of library business, followed by a book discussion (“Snow Flower and the Secret Fan” by Lisa See). Open to all. The Acacia Library is located at 750 E. Townley Ave. The library will be closed Nov. 11, Nov. 27 & 28. There is no programming scheduled for December, as the library will be closing at some point in the month to undergo renovations. Free programs for all at Yucca Kids from 5 to 12 years old and their families are invited to Super Saturday! events, beginning at 2 p.m. every Saturday. Gary Alpert teaches you how to build butterflies that fly in this session of his popular make-and-take series "Things That Fly,” Nov. 8. Roscoe the Rabbit presents the Magic Guy on Nov. 15; Magician Mark Carter will perform funny tricks with goofy puppets. Mad Science of Scottsdale uncovers the hidden components in ordinary light—build your own Newton’s color wheel to prove it on Nov. 22. Classical Music Appreciation returns 1:30 to 3 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of the month. Come hear the music of great composers and learn about their often operatic lives and personalities; the next meeting is Nov. 25. The Yucca Book Discussion Group meets 1-2 p.m. Nov. 11. This month’s discussion will be "Mayflower: a Story of Courage, Community and War" by Nathaniel Philbrick. Light refreshments will be provided. December will be “My Sister’s Keeper” by Jodi Picoult. Picoult will be speaking at Burton Barr Library on Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. at Cholla Library. Tickets for the author event will be available one hour before the event.
