Have a fun-filled day in the park while the kids are enjoying children’s rides and activities. There will be vendor booths and exhibits to learn about area services and organizations.  John C Lincoln Health Network will have 18 exhibits, including free blood pressure, and informational booths, such as dental and breast cancer information. There will be booths for artists to sell their products. Children’s activities include face painting and “fun” games.  Parking is available nearby with a shuttle ride to the park. Admission is free and refreshments will be available for purchase.

The Mothers’ Guild of Xavier College Preparatory hosts its 36th annual Holiday Dinner and Auction, I’ll Be Home for Christmas, which will begin with a silent auction featuring more than 400 items and culminate in a dinner and live auction.  The event will showcase the talent of Xavier students as the Honor Choir performs and select students enact a living nativity scene. Live auction items include a one-week getaway to a beautiful house in Manzanillo, Mexico, complete with food, beverages and a driver, a custom oil painting by Xavier dad and world-renowned artist Tom Pomeroy, and an FBR Greenskeeper Pass with exclusive access to private facilities. Strolling mariachis and artwork by Hispanic artists from Arizona and New Mexico highlight this festive, casual and friendly annual marketplace, the largest of its kind in Arizona. Chat with artists as they sell a range of distinctive and unique artwork. With art in every price range, Spanish Market offers buyers a wide selection of objects from different Hispanic traditions including santos, pottery, embroidery, furniture making, painting, printmaking and silver and tinwork. The 12th annual Sandra Day O’Connor Awards Luncheon, hosted by Arizona Foundation for Women (AFW), will honor two outstanding women, including Gov. Janet Napolitano, for their significant contributions to society and inspiration to women. Proceeds from the luncheon will go to AFW’s programs benefiting women and children of Arizona. Author Nancy E. Turner will be the guest speaker Turner is the OneBookAz author for her book, “These Is My Words: The Diary of Sarah Agnes Prine, 1881-1901.” The fiction book is based on the real life adventures of Turner’s great-grandmother and she has written several more books continuing the saga. A wide range of surplus materials—ranging from furniture and appliances to building materials and cars—will be auctioned off to the highest bidder. Gates open to the public at 7:30 a.m. and close at 3 p.m. The auction starts at 9 a.m. Items to be sold may be inspected at the auction yard from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 13-14. People planning to attend the auction now may register online and receive their bidder card when they arrive at the sale. ‘Bones in the Desert’ Book Signing

Friends of the Museum at the Phoenix Museum of History is hosting a fundraiser at which Jana Bommersbach will discuss and autograph her new book, “Bones in the Desert.”  The $15 cost includes museum entrance as well as wine and light refreshments. Hardback books will be available for purchase. Proceeds benefit the museum. Space is limited. Reservations required.

Light Up a Life

Light Up a Life, an annual remembrance event sponsored by Hospice of the Valley, includes a photo montage set to music provided by musicians from the Phoenix Symphony, the Pirazzi Quartet. More than 1,300 people participated in last year’s Light Up a Life event, honoring those who have died by gathering to pay tribute. Paper ornaments with space to write the person’s name will be available for people to hang on trees and illuminated necklaces will be distributed to guests. The event is free and open to the public.

CHAIRity Event

Victims of domestic violence will receive counseling and client services from the proceeds raised at the ninth annual CHAIRity event, "Sit a Moment, Stop the Violence." Creative chairs, designed by graduating students of the Arizona State University Interior Design Program, will be on display and sold through an auction at the event. The 11 chairs will be on display at the Phoenix City Hall atrium, 200 W. Washington St., during business hours from Nov. 3-19. Tickets are $125 per person. India Festival 2008

Celebrating the second edition of ASU Professor B. Michael Boyle’s “Constructions: Buildings in Arizona by Alfred Newman Beadle.” Modernist architect Al Beadle (1927-1998), who created a new vocabulary for building on challenging sites in the harsh, arid landscape of the Sonoran Desert, left a 40-year legacy in the Valley. Much of his built environment is undocumented and few resources referencing his work are available. The book release event takes place at a Beadle-designed building.

The United Nations Association of Greater Phoenix, in cooperation with supporting organizations, invites you to attend the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
