| Kiwanis honor local students |

Five local students were honored by the Kiwanis Club of Sunnyslope during its “Student of the Month” luncheon, held Oct. 9 the campus of Sunnyslope High School. Receiving a framed certificate as a Student of Month were Calvin Le Brun, seventh grade, and Alicia Miranda, eighth grade, from Royal Palm Middle School. Miranda is a straight-A student who loves math and enjoys singing, while Le Brun was described as a hard worker with a positive attitude who is quick to ask questions as well as give answers. In addition, Bianca Gutierrez, an eighth grader at Sunnyslope Elementary, was lauded for being a friendly student who likes to help others; and Mariana Nuñez, an eighth grader from Mountain View Elementary, was praised for excelling in all her classes, including her favorite class, science. All of the above students are in the Washington Elementary School District. Also honored at the luncheon was Sunnyslope High School senior Will Auther, who received a $100 savings bond. Auther has a 4.0 GPA, is in the top 1 percent of his class and has received numerous awards throughout his four years at Sunnyslope. He has applied to Stanford University and hopes to study creative writing. The Kiwanis honor outstanding students each month as a way of applauding their academic and leadership successes and encouraging them to continue to set an example for their fellow students.
