District 6 has new councilman

Sal DiCiccio, a 51-year-old former Phoenix City councilman who served from 1994 to 2000, was selected last month by the Phoenix mayor and City Council in a 5-to-3 vote to fill the District 6 City Council seat.

District 6 is shaped like a barbell, and includes contiguous North Central, Biltmore and Arcadia neighborhoods and also Ahwatukee (see http://phoenix.gov/DISTRICT6/ dist6map.html).

The council seat became vacant Feb. 4 when Greg Stanton resigned to accept a position with the Arizona Attorney General’s Office.

DiCiccio, who will serve the remainder of a term that ends on Jan. 4, 2010, was among 21 candidates interviewed by the mayor and City Council. Ironically, he replaces the councilman who replaced him when DiCiccio resigned to run for U.S. Congress.

Mayor Phil Gordon and City Council members Thelda Williams, Peggy Neely, Maria Baier, and Claude Mattox voted for DiCiccio, while council members Tom Simplot, Michael Nowakowski and Michael Johnson cast dissenting votes. Public comment was invited prior to the final vote.

DiCiccio said he will focus on jobs, quality of life issues and neighborhood preservation. “I’m relieved and honored, but there is a lot of work to do,” DiCiccio said.

A graduate of Arizona State University with a bachelor of science in business administration, DiCiccio and his wife have 4-year-old twin daughters.

A small-business owner in Arcadia, DiCiccio already has announced his candidacy for the September special election. Details on the upcoming campaign announcement will be forthcoming, DiCiccio said.
