Yappy Hour is alive and well in north central Phoenix. Yes, you can take your dog along when you dine out at certain restaurants. It’s the perfect time of year to enjoy dining alfresco with Fido.

To make it a happy experience, Phoenix resident Jodie Snyder has written a book about dining out with dogs and she offers a few tips, because not everyone shares a love of dogs.

Snyder advises that you feed your dog before you head out to dine. A full dog is less likely to want to sniff around other guests’ plates of food. Still, bring treats for your dog to reward them for good behavior at the restaurant.

Some restaurants have dog treats on the menu or hand them out free, but most only offer water dishes. Definitely don’t forget to bring waste bags, just in case. You can find more hints at her website: www.happydogphoenix.com.

Bottom line, you know your dog the best. If your pet is hyper and never stops begging at your table at home, it’s probably best not to bring that dog into a atmosphere filled with temptation.

Maricopa County health regulations say dogs must be on a leash. Dogs also can’t sit on your lap, or on a chair. Wait staff are not allowed to pet animals, so refrain from trying to share you pet with the help.

Not to play favorites, but one restaurant has won a Swagger Award for Best Pet-Friendly Patio from Sway Events. OHSO Eatery and nanoBrewery, at 4900 E. Indian School Road, has raised the bar when it comes to being pet-friendly. Pets receive special homemade treats and there is even a dog wash on the patio for the canine customers.

“We also tell all of our guests to take pictures of their dogs on our patio and post them on our Facebook,” says Stuart Wilson, one of the managers. “Every week I pick the cutest picture and make them our ‘Growler of the Week.’ The person then wins a $25 gift certificate and we put the picture up on the wall on our Back Patio.”
