The temperatures are on the rise in the Valley of the Sun, and so is the need for volunteers at Duet. The wait list has soared to 90 homebound adults waiting for vital volunteer services such as grocery shopping, friendly visiting and transportation to medical appointments.

Some of the regular volunteers are themselves retired and head out of town during the scorching Phoenix summer, to return with cooler fall temperatures. The neighbors who normally receive those volunteers’ assistance still need help for the summer, so “fill-in” positions are available just for the summer months. Commitments are generally once a week or twice a month.

Through volunteers, Duet is able to provide these services free of charge to help Valley seniors and homebound adults live as independently as possible. Duet has been serving its neighbors since 1981.

A volunteer orientation is set for 4-6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 13 at Church of the Beatitudes, 555 W. Glendale Ave. A photo ID is required. For more information, call 602-274-5022.
