Brandon Hulston
North Central resident Brandon Hulston, who graduated from Brophy College Prep this year, leaves this month for a year’s study in China before returning to the states in June 2018 to attend Boston College.
Hulston will study Mandarin in Beijing thanks to a NSLI for Youth (NSLI-Y) Scholarship, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
This is not Hulston’s first trip to China. Last year he received an NSLI-Y Scholarship to travel to the country for the summer to study its culture and receive informal language practice in an immersion environment.
The NSLI-Y program seeks to increase the number of Americans who can engage with native speakers of critical languages. The goals of the NSLI-Y program include sparking a lifelong interest in foreign languages and cultures, and developing a corps of young Americans with the skills necessary to advance international dialogue and cross-cultural opportunities in the private, academic, and government sectors.
