The city of Phoenix is giving a hand to residents in local schools hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last year the city allocated more than $6.4 million in food assistance to the community. The Alhambra Elementary, Cartwright School, Balsz School and Roosevelt Elementary School districts each received $135,000 from the food assistance fund and used it to serve meals to schools. Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego recently visited Manuel “Lito” Peña School in the Cartwright School District, which serves students and their families, as well as any individual in the community who contacts it and is eligible for meal assistance.

Manuel “Lito” Peña School Principal Casey Newman said it was an honor for Gallego to visit the school and feature “our incredible food distribution program.” The Cartwright School District distributes food seven days a week from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with pick-up locations at all the district’s schools. Residents can obtain meals for the week, including breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. Cartwright also is delivering meals through 15 to 20 bus routes Mondays through Fridays. The district assists people suffering from homelessness and those with special needs.
