The Community Canopy Grant is now available for city of Phoenix residents. To improve tree canopy coverage and mitigate extreme heat citywide, the City of Phoenix’s Office of Heat Response and Mitigation (OHRM) has created the Community Canopy Grant Program, through which the city seeks to improve tree canopy coverage in neighborhoods through Phoenix where it is currently low.

Applicants can be neighborhood associations, single-family or multi-family residences, small businesses, homeowner associations or churches. Grant recipients will receive free-of-charge 15- or 25-gallon trees from an approved species list; landscape contractors will plant the provided trees; a supply bag of materials to support the establishment and survival of each tree, two T-shirts, assistance with tree maintenance and more.

Completed applications and proposals are accepted on a rolling basis and reviewed monthly. The next deadline is July 8 at 11:59 p.m. Funding is on a first come first serve basis, and all funding must be spent by May 15, 2029.

The tree planting program is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the United States Forest Service. Because this funding comes from federal sources, the city is required to follow specific guidelines on where trees can be planted. Applicants should check whether they live in an eligible area before applying.

Additional information about the grant program and a link to the eligibility area map can be found at https://phoenix-gov.formstack.com/forms/community_canopy_grant_application.
