Healthcare workers assist food banks
Hunger is a healthcare issue. That’s why hospitals, physicians and dentists across the state are joining to collect food and cash for local food banks in September.
“Healthcare Fights Hunger” is a food drive from Sept. 15-22 coordinated across the state through the Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association, the Arizona Academy of General Dentistry, the Arizona Medical Association and the Arizona Association of Food Banks. The drive coincides with National Hunger Action Month.
“Besides learning, hunger hinders growth and development, and a child’s ability to fight infection and heal from injuries,” said Pamela Murphy, MD, pediatrician at Mendy’s Place, an emergency center for children at John C. Lincoln Deer Valley Hospital. “While proper nutrition is certainly important to children and teens, it’s also especially important to the elderly. We view hunger as a healthcare issue, and we’re urging employees, physicians, patients and visitors to end it by donating non-perishable food or cash to the drive,” she said.
The Sunnyslope Historical Society announces two new exhibits opening this month at the Sunnyslope History Museum, 737 E. Hatcher Road.
The first exhibit is a permanent representation of the People’s Drug Store Pharmacy drive-thru window. Currently the home of the Society, the former drugstore building—which had been at 111 E. Dunlap Ave.—was donated to the Society by A & C Properties and moved in 1999 for the Society’s use. Its mid-1950s drive-thru window was the first of its kind in the state of Arizona, and one of only five in the entire nation at that time.

Free event looks at sustainability
In a city filled with messages about sustainability, Church of the Beatitudes United Church of Christ is hosting a free “green” Open House and Children’s Fair for the community on Sunday, Sept. 7 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The event will focus on welcoming the community and providing education and outreach regarding sustainability.
The theme of the open house and fair is based on Kermit the Frog Muppet song, “It’s Not Easy Being Green.” In the beginning of the song, Kermit laments the fact that he is green, but by the end, he says, “It’s beautiful! And that’s what I want to be!” Church of the Beatitudes wants to show how beautiful—and easy—it is to be green and be a better steward of the environment.
