When Stacy Anderson took over the old Sunset Bowl in Sunnyslope a little over four years ago, he made it his mission to not only remodel the 1960s bowling alley and turn it into a state-of-the-art entertainment experience for the whole family, but also to become an integral part of the community it serves.

To that end, Let it Roll Bowl and Entertainment, 8925 N. 12th St., will once again be the home of free summer bowling for kids, which is ongoing through Oct. 31. Let it Roll Bowl is part of the national Kids Bowl Free program, designed by bowling centers to give back to their communities and provide a safe, secure, and fun way for kids to spend time this summer. It’s the third consecutive year the local bowling alley has participated in the program.

“Our goal is to actively participate as members of the community, and to cherish our role as a ‘gathering place’ where fun, laughter, and personal growth with friends and family are the primary focus,” Anderson says.

Rosie Trujillo and her two granddaughters have signed up for several dates of free bowling this summer. Trujillo says the two girls, ages 6 and 8, are very competitive with each other and always have a good time at the bowling alley.

Children age 15 and younger can receive two free games of bowling a day; passes are distributed weekly by e-mail after the child is registered online at www.kidsbowlfree.com/letitroll. There is no limit on the number of children an individual family can register. However, children younger than 15 must have a supervising adult present during the games.

Bowling hours for the Kids Bowl Free program are 12-7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 12-7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. Bowling shoes are required; if the child does not have his or her own shoes, standard shoe rental rates ($3.25) will apply.
