It took longer than expected to finish counting all the ballots for the city of Phoenix District 3 council seat, as they were part of the backlog of Maricopa County early and provisional ballots that took more than five days to complete.

When all the votes were finally tallied, interim Dist. 3 Councilwoman Debra Stark had a commanding lead, with 19,526 votes, or 41 percent. However, she needed more than 51 percent of the votes to win outright.

The race now heads to a March 14 runoff election between Stark and DeRose. The last date to register to vote in the runoff election is Feb. 13; early voting by mail begins Feb. 15. The last date to request an early ballot by mail is March 3. You can register to vote or update your existing registration online at www.servicearizona.com.
