You can encourage your child to obtain an annual flu shot while making it a fun lesson through Banner Children’s.

It is providing a free coloring page to stress the importance of acquiring flu shots, available to download at BannerHealth.com/flu. The best time of year to get a flu shot is in October or November, according to Banner Health. Every year about 5 to 20-percent of people in the United States contract the flu and about 36,000 people die from it. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said since 2010 flu-related hospitalizations among children ages 5 and younger ranged from 7,000 to 26,000.

The CDC said compared to other viral respiratory infections including the common cold, infection from the flu frequently causes a more severe illness. Less severe cases of influenza can force people of all ages to stay home from work and school for several days.

Banner Health said the viruses in the flu shot are inactivated, meaning you cannot contract the flu from acquiring a flu shot.
