During its formal meeting on June 18, the Phoenix City Council approved a federal grant for construction funds for 80 new affordable housing units for seniors at the Helen Drake Senior Center site on 27th Avenue, south of Northern Avenue.
In her recent newsletter, District 5 Councilmember Betty Guardado said, “This project will convert empty city land into safe, high-quality affordable housing for seniors with lower to median income – close to the services they count on, like enrichment programs, social activities, transportation and meals.
Guardado continued, “It’s part of our citywide goal to build more affordable housing in Phoenix by 2030. In addition, we’re excited that this new project will be within walking distance of the Haven, a new transitional housing for seniors experiencing homelessness, on Northern Ave. and the I-17. We’re building housing to integrate seniors into the community that will improve the stability and safety of this neighborhood.”
