Hello, North Central neighbors!

In these fractious times, I wanted to offer a small ray of light that I witnessed one evening last month.

Coming across Bethany Home, I noticed two vehicles with hoods up and hazard lights flashing at the 19th Avenue intersection. The cars were in the left and middle lane, leaving only my lane and the left turn lane to get around. As I sat at the red light, the driver of the disabled car stowed his jumper cables and began to push his vehicle from the middle lane, north onto 19th.

When the light turned green, I stayed in place so that he could safely push his car past me. Then, a person in the crosswalk ran over to assist, and as the southbound left-turn lane signaled green, another vehicle made a U-turn, a passenger jumped out and also came to the assistance of the stranded motorist.

Four completely random people on a random Monday night worked together to help a stranger who was struggling. Meanwhile, no one honked, yelled or sped around impatiently – a common occurrence on our congested Phoenix streets. Seeing the willingness of people to lend a hand – without being asked and with nothing in it for them – gave me a mental boost that carried me through the evening. If something positive can be achieved by working together to benefit one stranger in a single moment, I thought, imagine what could be accomplished at a greater scale.

We hope that you enjoy our May issue, and until next month, all my best,
