If your child has outgrown their car seat or it has expired, the Neighborhood of Automotive Repair Professionals (NARPRO) wants you to recycle it, not throw it away.

NARPRO is teaming up with Child Crisis Arizona, Safe Kids Maricopa County and many local organizations to collect old, expired and damaged car seats. Donate them to any of the participating Network of Neighborhood Auto Repair Professionals shops through Wednesday, April 15. Two local spots are at Martin’s Auto Repair at 3636 N. 16th St. and High-Tech Car Care at 2924 E. Thomas Road.

Older car seats and ones that have been involved in accidents might not have visible damage but experts say they should not be used. This annual event helps people with older, expired or damaged car seats dispose of them in an environmentally friendly manner by keeping them out of vehicles and landfills. Volunteers and NARPRO shop owners will dismantle the old car seats on April 18 and recycle the plastic, metal and fabric components separately.

NARPRO recommends independent, family-owned, full-service auto repair businesses that have passed 26 stringent tests. Safe Kids Maricopa County offers resources to help keep children safe.
