With winter break on the horizon, North Central families who are looking to keep children engaged and active on a budget are invited to explore the programs offered at city of Phoenix youth and activity centers.

In Sunnyslope, stop by the Sunnyslope Youth Center at 1702 W. Peoria Ave. The center is the result of the Sunnyslope Village Alliance working with the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department to create a fun center for youth 17 and under.

Open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 3 to 8 p.m.; Wednesday, 2 to 8 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the center offers seasonal dance, art, sports and educational programs. It is adjacent to the Winifred Green Park, complete with a full sized basketball court, playground and sports field. Contact the center by calling 602-534-5088.

A little further west is the Washington Activity Center at 2240 W. Citrus Way. Built in 1969, it is a multi-generational facility with a full size gymnasium, seven activity rooms and an auditorium. The center offers a wide variety of activities and services to the public at a minimal cost, including programs for toddlers, youth, teenagers, adults and seniors.

The center sits adjacent to Washington Park, which boasts open green space and traditional park amenities (basketball and volleyball court, softball and soccer fields). Young residents can sign up for a variety of classes at the center with a range of costs – from free to $50 for programs and classes and $75 for Spring Break Camp (March 16 to 20).

Annual membership passes to Parks and Recreation Department community centers and neighborhood recreation centers is $20 for Phoenix residents ($5 for youth age 17 and younger). Day passes are available for $1 (youth) and $2 (adults). Learn more by visiting www.phoenix.gov/parks.
