During some recent reorganizing, I found a drawing my son made in 2007. It depicted Earth and read, “Save our planet – it’s the only one with chocolate!” Now, I like to think that somewhere in the vast and unknown universe, there is another planet with chocolate, but I could not agree more with the sentiment.
I also would contend that in order to save our planet, we inhabitants are going to have to learn how to work together. One way to begin is to step outside of your house (and perhaps your comfort zone) and get to know your neighbors. This is a theme we have been focusing on this year and we continue with this month’s cover feature about a neighborhood shade tree project.
Related, I spoke with a reader who attended a March solid waste rate increase presentation. She is not happy with the proposed increase, and further, lamented the fact that people throw away far too many still usable items. I agree. Phoenix has many thrift and resale stores that would gladly take your usable goods (and even deconstructed items). Composting and proper recycling also helps alleviate the burden on landfills – it just takes thoughtful action on our part. In the meantime, council will vote on the rate increase on Earth Day, April 22.
As always, you will find news from our North Central neighbors, businesses and schools, along with places to eat and drink, our pet of the month and a wide variety of things to do in Phoenix.
We hope you enjoy our April issue, and until month, all my best,
