Forty-nine years ago, Sunnyslope residents Winifred and Frank Green bought some property on Cave Creek Road, which at the time was an unimproved, two-lane road. They turned one of the buildings into the Antique Outpost, the name being inspired by the still rural nature of the area. But they had vision enough to know the area would grow—and so would their business.

“Cave Creek Road was the main way to north Phoenix where the population was sure to grow, even though it was a narrow two-lane street at the time with no sidewalks or improvements,” Winn Green recalls.

The idea of an antique store appealed to both of them. “We liked antiques and collectibles and wanted to know more about them,” Winn explained. She enjoyed tending to the shop and Frank enjoyed the search and hunt for fun and unique items. The store is full of old postcards, jewelry, pictures, china, Western items, small furniture, dolls, and other collectibles.

Antique Outpost is the oldest operating antique store in the Sunnyslope community. Winn says their success is based in part on the fact that when a customer comes in, he or she talks to one of the owners. There are no employees—it is strictly a family-run business, and has been from the beginning.

Winn says they haven’t considered retiring. “We have been blessed to have good solid antiques and collectibles that our customers appreciate, and a good location to attract new customers, both locally as well as out-of-town visitors. Why would anyone retire when you enjoy what you are doing?”

Antique Outpost, 10012 N. Cave Creek Road, is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday – Saturday. For more information, stop by or call 602-943-9594.
