Phoenix Country Day kicks-off 50th Celebration with concert

Phoenix Country Day School will kick off a yearlong celebration of its 50th anniversary with a concert featuring Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, presented by the Red Rocks Music Festival. The concert takes place 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, at Camelback Bible Church, 3900 E. Stanford Drive. Tickets are $5 per person, available online at www.pcds.org/50/vivaldi. The program will be performed by the Red Rocks Music Festival strings ensemble with soloists Borivoj Martinic-Jercic, leader of The Zagreb Soloists and former concertmaster of the Phoenix Symphony, and David Ehrlich, founder-director of Musica Viva, Virginia. The music will be complemented by poetry readings appropriate to the seasons. Founded in 1961, Phoenix Country Day School is a nonprofit, nonsectarian college preparatory school enrolling boys and girls in pre-k through grade 12. To learn more, visit www.pcds.org.

 

Giving the Lift Station a ‘facelift’

Sunnyslope residents are invited to attend a community meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 8, about proposed upgrades to Lift Station #53, at 7th Street and Las Palmaritas Lane. The lift station is a 50’ x 50’ foot walled enclosure that protects equipment necessary to the city’s water and sewer system. The walls are currently made of beige slump block. As part of upgrading the site’s security and equipment, Sunnyslope residents requested that an artist be hired through the city’s Public Art Program to enhance the lift station’s appearance. Meet the artist team coLab, city staff and learn more about the planned neighborhood improvements. The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Cowden Center, room 2AB, 9202 N 2nd St.

 

Eighth graders invited to SHS for Family Dinner

            Sunnyslope High School, 34 W. Dunlap Ave., hosts a Family Dinner 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, for Sunnyslope community eighth graders and their families. The event includes door prizes, entertainment by The B-Boys, guest speakers, and more. Sponsored by the Sunnyslope Family Services Center Community Council. The Vig gives back to schools

            The Vig Uptown, which opened earlier this year at 6015 N. 16th St., is giving back to area schools this month through its Community Programs. When you come in for brunch, lunch or dinner during the month of September, the Vig Uptown will donate 15 percent of your check directly back to the neighborhood school of your choice. Simply tell the server which school you would like to contribute to, and the restaurant will write a check to that school’s PTA/PTO at the end of the month. The Vig Uptown also will donate $500 in Vig Gift Certificates to the school that earns the largest rebate. For more information, call 602-633-1187.

 

Two new dance classes offered

An East Coast Swing dance (course #68974) is being offered every Tuesday beginning Sept. 14 at the Sunnyslope Community Center, 802 E. Vogel Ave. The class, for ages 18 and up, takes place 6-7 p.m. and runs for eight weeks. Cost is $50 per person.

Also kicking off this month is an Arizona Country Two-Step class (course #67383), taking place every Thursday beginning Sept. 16. Class runs from 6-6:55 p.m. and cost is $50. Register online, using the course number provided, at www.phoenix.gov/parks. For more information, call 602-262-6661.

 

Financial education programs for family

Arizona Saves, a nonprofit organization, has partnered with the city of Phoenix’s Sunnyslope Community Center to offer three free education workshops this month for adults, teens and children age 6 and older.

            The sessions include dinner, served from 5:30-6 p.m., followed by the program from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Session 1, “building a Better Budget,” takes place Sept. 16; Session 2, “Taking Charge of Your Credit,” is on Sept. 23, and the series concludes on Sept. 30 with “Preparing to Purchase a Home.”

            A $50 savings bond will be given to every child who completes all three workshops (accompanied by an adult). There will be weekly games and prizes for children and teens, and a weekly savings bond raffle for adults.
