crosswalkThe Governor’s Office of Highway Safety recently awarded the Street Transportation Department a more than $47,000 grant to enhance its traffic safety education efforts.

The grant will be used in promoting pedestrian safety through advertising, expand the department’s array of educational materials for young adults such as its popular bike safety comics, and purchase 1,000 bicycle helmets to provide for students participating in the city’s Bike to School events.

“More people than ever are bicycling and walking around Phoenix,” said Tom Godbee, deputy director, Street Transportation Department. “This increase in activity is a great addition to our community that makes the city more enjoyable for everyone. It also means we must do more to educate drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians on safely sharing the road.”
