“Quilt Architecture,” an art installation by artist Luke Haynes, will be unveiled at Sereno Park June 7 and on display through September as part of the ¡Sombra! Project (photo courtesy of Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture).

As part of the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture’s ¡Sombra! Experiments in Shade project, quilt artist Luke Haynes will discuss his art and career at a June 5 event. Spanning 160 shows and over 400 quilts, the event will showcase the arc of his career – from his studio practice to innovations in the colliding world of textiles and fine arts.

The event will be hosted at the Phoenix Area Quilters Association meeting at Faith United Methodist Church, 8640 N. 19th Ave. The lecture, which begins at 6:45 p.m., will be 60-minutes, with time for Q&A with the artist afterward.

Haynes is one of nearly a dozen artists participating in ¡Sombra!, a public art project that brings together local and national artists, civic leaders and residents to experiment with cooling and shading solutions in response to Phoenix’s extreme urban heat. Initially launched at public parks across the city, the temporary structures will be showcased at Steele Indian School Park during a Celebration of Shade Festival, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 20, 6-9 p.m. Learn more at www.sombraphx.org.
