I received a number of positive responses to my July editorial, and I thought you might want to know what some of your neighbors are saying, including one reader who said the editorial resonated with them because they had recently seen the Join or Die documentary. “I agree that rebuilding community – for the common good – is critical to solving our crisis of trust in democracy, in our country’s foundations and in each other,” they wrote.
Another reader wrote: “I believe that community is what our country’s founders had in mind, as well as governance by and for the people of our new nation. Yes, there have been setbacks, resistance, and breaks, but overall we have continued to move forward. I am hoping that we as community leaders, as we demonstrate acceptance and inclusion of all people, will be able to help return the Ship of State to the fulfillment of a dream for our nation.”
Another said: “While it’s true that many communities across the country are experiencing fragmentation and disconnection, I don’t believe that’s the case in North Central. In fact, I see the opposite. We are evolving, yes – but we remain a strong, rooted community, bound together by shared purpose and pride in where we live.”
Also: “May our country remember what it means to love your neighbors and come together for the common good!”
We appreciate all the thoughtful responses and will continue to look for ways to further the conversation in future issues. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy our August issue, and until next month, all my best,
