During a January book drive, the Phoenix Chapter of National Charity League donated more than 4,000 books to Valley nonprofits (submitted photo).
The Phoenix Chapter of National Charity League (NCL) participated in NCL’s annual National Day of Service book drive on Jan. 11, focusing on literacy as a way to address a critical need in local communities.
According to the National Literacy Trust, almost one in five children between the ages of five and eight do not have a book of their own at home. NCL’s goal is to provide access to reading and spark a lifelong love of reading.
The chapter donated more than 4,200 books and made more than 200 bookmarks with inspiring messages for Phoenix Children’s Hospital, OCJKids, St. Vincent de Paul, two local schools and the victims of the California wildfires. In collaboration with chapters across the country, and in celebration of NCL’s 100th anniversary, their goal this year is to donate one million books to organizations around the country.
The chapter’s annual membership drive is now open and runs until March 1. Mothers and daughters who would like to make a positive impact within the community are invited to join. Visit www.nationalcharityleague.org/chapter/phoenix to learn more.
