Valley residents can ride light rail all day for free with a commemorative copper card, available exclusively during the June 7 South Central Extension/ Downtown Hub opening celebration (photo courtesy of Valley Metro).

Riders will have a new two-line light rail system with the opening of the South Central Extension/Downtown Hub on June 7. Travelers on light rail will soon have new destinations, new schedules, new platforms, new A and B lines and new transfer options in downtown Phoenix.

With the opening of the 5.5-mile South Central Extension, which connects downtown Phoenix along Central/1st avenues to Baseline Road, Valley Metro Rail introduces two-line operation. The A Line will operate between Gilbert Road/Main Street in Mesa and the Downtown Hub, and the B Line will operate between Metro Parkway in northwest Phoenix and Baseline Road/Central Avenue. The project includes a light rail transit hub in downtown Phoenix, eight new stations, one new 110-space park-and-ride and public art along the entire corridor.

A ribbon cutting and community celebration is planned for Saturday, June 7, to commemorate the milestone. Festivities begin at 7:45 a.m. with a Cruisin’ on Central parade, which kicks off at the Ed Pastor Transit Center (Broadway/Central Avenue). Service from stations along the South Central Extension and Downtown Hub begins at 9:30 a.m. that day.
