Generally open the third Saturday of the month, the New Roots Farm Stand offers locally grown, seasonal fruits and vegetables (photo courtesy of CamelBackyard).
North Central residents looking for fresher food alternatives can check out two North Central markets throughout the summer months.
Located at 1616 W. Camelback Road, the New Roots Farm Stand at CamelBackyard is open to neighbors once a month from 9 a.m. to noon. Once higher summer temperatures hit, the market will open earlier, 8-11 a.m. Managed by the International Rescue Committee, the farm stand offers assorted seasonal fruits and vegetables grown locally by New Roots Phoenix farmers. They accept cash, cards and Double Up Food Bucks (receive a 50 percent discount on a produce purchase when using an EBT card).

The Uptown Farmers Market, held year-round at North Phoenix Baptist Church, 5757 N. Central Ave., moves to its Saturday only summer hours, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., beginning in May. Wednesday markets will return in the fall. The market hosts more than 90 vendors offering not only local food (fruits, veggies, poultry, beef, seafood, dairy, eggs and vegan options) and groceries (from pantry staples and health items to kitchen supplies), but brunch and lunch options, gardening supplies, art, coffee, tea and drinks, and even supplies for pets.
