What began as a family-owned cheese shop on Central Avenue in 1949 became a go-to sandwich shop in 1972, when the Zawatski family took over. Now, after nearly 75 years of serving sandwiches, smiles and memories to North Central Phoenix residents, Cheese N Stuff announced a new chapter – led by the very community it helped nourish.
Four local families, all long-time fans, Phoenix natives and loyal customers, have come together to take over ownership of Cheese N Stuff. Their shared mission is simple: preserve the history, spirit, and beloved flavors of this Phoenix institution, while refreshing the space for the next generation.
The Zawatski family announced that they would close the shop at the end of April, but Cheese N Stuff remained open through May 2025 for customers to enjoy their favorites and celebrate the transition. The new owners say that the deli is now closed for light refurbishments during June and July, designed to honor its nostalgic charm while modernizing behind the scenes. A grand reopening is planned for August 2025, “just in time for the back-to-school season,” they said.
“Cheese N Stuff is a part of Phoenix history – and it’s part of so many personal stories. We’re not changing what people love; we’re making sure it’s here for decades to come,” said Tom Palmer, representing the new ownership group. “Same name. Same recipes. Same heart – with fresh hands ready to carry it forward.”
