In July, driverless car service provider Waymo announced that teen accounts are now available for families in Phoenix.

In a press release, the company said, “We know there are many barriers to reliable teen transportation, including busy parents, safety concerns, age, vehicle costs and more. Waymo teen accounts offer a unique solution for busy families.”

Teens ages 14-17 in Metro Phoenix can travel independently across the Valley’s 315 square miles with Waymo when linked to a parent or guardian’s account. Parents of eligible teens can use their own account to invite their teen into the program, pairing them together. Specially-trained Rider Support agents are available to assist teens during rides and may loop in their parents if needed. Teens can also share their trip status with their parents for real-time updates on their progress, and parents receive all ride receipts.

Whether giving them the keys or trusting their friends or other drivers, it’s often nerve-wracking for parents to put their teens’ lives in someone else’s hands. The Center for Disease Control estimates that teen drivers have a fatal crash rate almost three times as high as drivers ages 20 and older per mile driven. The company says that it is committed to offering products and partnering with advocacy organizations like Students Against Destructive Decisions to drive down these sobering statistics.
