As part of pavement maintenance efforts approved in the City of Phoenix Transportation 2050 plan, the Street Transportation Department’s 2021 paving season, which began in March and ended in November, 518 miles received paving treatments (including all pavement treatments completed as part of the Accelerated Pavement Maintenance Program). Additionally, 3,724 pedestrian ramps were upgraded to current ADA standards to meet federal requirements.
As part of the Accelerated program, which was funded through $200 million borrowed from future Transportation 2050 revenues, select major streets will receive mill and overlay treatment. The treatment involves the removal of the top layer of asphalt to accommodate a new layer of pavement. This technique is necessary when asphalt surface has reached the end of its service life or preventive treatments no longer benefit a road. Other treatments are seal coats and crack seal.
Area roads that are planned to receive mill and overlay treatment during FY 2022 include Indian School Road, from 7th Street to SR-51; Missouri Avenue, from east of 7th Street to west of 16th Street; and Central Avenue, from south of Northern Avenue to south of Dunlap Avenue.
