Friends of Animal Care and Control, an organization that strives to end euthanasia of dogs and cats in Maricopa County, will honor the winners of its 2016 Hero Awards at a special gala 6-10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27 at the Montelucia Resort & Spa, 4949 E. Lincoln Drive.

Five “Animal Heroes” will be recognized, including a police dog from Glendale who was killed in the line of duty. The “Human Hero” Award will be presented to Dr. Kathleen “Kit” Slocum of Dr. Kit’s Mobile Surgical Unit, who works tireless to help animals in low-income and underserved communities with her unique RV vet clinic.
