Take steps to avoid falls

Falls account for almost a third of non-deadly injuries in the United States. Seniors have an even greater risk of falling because of problems tied to aging including declining muscle tone and balance and vision changes.

Because of this, experts recommend that seniors turn on lights, especially around stairs, to avoid tripping hazards.

Seniors also need to be aware of changes in flooring and to pick up ice that falls on the kitchen floor. Area rugs can pose hazards, so it is best for seniors to avoid them altogether. Step stools are valuable and safer to use than ladders. There are many risks outdoors, too, such as uneven pavement and cracks in sidewalks that can cause people to trip and fall without warning.
